<p><span style="color: #333333;"><em>Social Media and Social Networking are one of the top leveraged marketing strategies for women in business online today. Here&#8217;s a guest post by Christine Gallagher of CommunicateValue.com on how to get your profile working for you!</em></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2079" src="http://www.iawbo.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/stand_out-300x289.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="289" />One of the most basic but most important pieces of your social networking presence is having <strong>an <span style="text-decoration: underline;">effective</span> profile</strong>.  Not only is it a snapshot into who you are and what it is you do, it&#8217;s usually <strong>the first impression others will have of you</strong>. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Here are some ways to make your profile work for you and get you noticed&#8211;without boring people to tears.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Use a real photo of yourself. </strong>On certain sites you occasionally see people using their brand logo as their picture or avatar but I advise against this.  You want others to relate to you as a real person, especially if they are thinking of hiring or buying from you!  In most cases, that is something you just can&#8217;t convey through a graphic.  (Unless maybe you are Coca-Cola!)</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: medium;">By all means, use a <strong>professional photo</strong> if possible.  If not, you should choose one that is of you alone&#8211;with all due respect to your family and pets.  If you are using social sites to even remotely drum up business, you need to appear professional as far your main photo goes.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Location, location, location.</strong> Include at the very least your state, province or town.  Even though it is the world wide web, you never know when local opportunities will pop up.  Make it easy for others to seek you out.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Have a well thought-out bio.</strong> Your bio is what people will be looking to in order to get the essence of what you are all about.  You can include a succinct version of your &#8220;elevator pitch&#8221; here as long as you avoid sounding too sales-y.  When you read it back to yourself you should be able to get a feel for how it comes off.  Adjust accordingly.  Write it with an emphasis on how you provide value to others.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Include all of your relevant links. </strong> You want to give people an easy way to find out more about you.  Plus, there&#8217;s no one who doesn&#8217;t want more web traffic, right?  The amount of space you are allotted for this varies from site to site, but definitely include your website and/or blog as well as the profile URLs of any other social networking sites you are active on.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Use your full name if possible.</strong> Depending on the site, you may or may not have room to fit your whole name.  Also, if your name is common, it may have already been taken, such as on a site like Twitter.  In the case of my full name, I went with my first name and last initial on Twitter because they don&#8217;t allow enough characters for both words to fit.   I am satisfied with that, however, because people are still able to associate it closely with my full name.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Personal tidbits are not a bad thing. </strong>Don&#8217;t be shy, there is a reason it&#8217;s called social networking!  Some people are reticent about exposing anything about themselves outside of their business persona.  However, part of what draws others to you is your authentic self.  You may have a snazzy professional profile photo, but posting pictures here and there of your latest vacation won&#8217;t do any harm.  In fact, it could be great for business.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Fill out your background completely.</strong> Part of what helps others find you is the information that you fill out about your education, interests, past employment and groups and associations you belong to.  This is especially true on a site like LinkedIn.  Keep your information up to date so that opportunities can easily find you.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The most important takeaway? <strong>Ensure your presence is consistent across all networks.</strong> This not only strengthens your personal brand, but helps to establish credibility as well. Plus, to make it even easier on yourself, keep a document on your computer with all of your profile information.  That way you can just copy and paste it when needed.</span></span></p>

Twitter is all about real-time communication. Facebook and LinkedIn offer real-time updates. And this Internet Marketing trend became so strong, that even Google started incorporating real-time listings in its SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) earlier this month. The real-time web puts new demands on a small business, and successful companies will find a strategy and sustainable process that enables them to have an authentic, consistent real-time voice in the marketplace in 2010.</span></span></p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Trend #5: Mobile</span></span></strong></p>
<p><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The mobile market is exploding. According to the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA), mobile marketing expenditures are expected to exceed $2 billion in 2010. Cell phone penetration in the US has surpassed cable TV, web access and home PCs. Nearly 50 million people in the US access the web on a mobile device. It&#8217;s being predicted that by 2014 nearly 20 billion mobile apps will be downloaded yearly. Thirty-eight percent of youth already claim that mobile is more important to them than their wallet! There&#8217;s been a lot of hype about mobile for years now, but the mobile web market is really here.</span></span></p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Trend #6: Location-Based Marketing</span></span></strong></p>
<p><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-size: medium;">With the explosion of demand in the mobile market (see Trend #5: Mobile, above), location-based marketing is set to correspondingly ignite. We already see services like Loopt, Google Latitude and Yowza!! offering location-based marketing services. It&#8217;s only a matter of time before Yelp starts dynamically generating real-time restaurant offers as you search for a local eating option on your iPhone. Although 2010 is sure to be a year of experimentation in this area, expect to see activity around location-based marketing, both to passers-by as well as to social networking groups, in the coming year.</span></span></p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Trend #7: Social</span></span></strong></p>
<p><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Social marketing has also received a lot of hype. Facebook boasts over 300 million users, and roughly half of these log in every day. Twitter attracts more than 22 million unique visitors every month. YouTube has more than 100 million users in the US, and adds 20 hours of content every minute. Expect a maturing of the market in 2010, where social marketing becomes less a tactic or novelty and instead becomes more of an authentic process for businesses to listen, converse and engage with customers. </span></span></p>

As an example of successful video marketing to this audience, the Wine Library video blog attracts more than 100,000 visitors every month. Face it, people like video. And both online and mobile-based video usage is increasing. The technology to publish videos has been simplified greatly through The Flip, the iPhone 3GS and YouTube. Just as text-based blogs took off in popularity several years ago, expect a similar rise in video blogs and embedded videos in text-based blogs in 2010. </span></span></p>

Research points to Hispanics spending more time online than non-Hispanics and being more active online than non-Hispanics. Seventy-percent (70%) of Hispanic Internet users describe themselves as &#8220;frequently&#8221; or &#8220;always&#8221; online while watching TV. To reach the US Hispanic market, remember that 88% of US Hispanics learn Spanish as their first language. Expect savvy businesses in 2010 to accommodate this fast-growing market with localized websites and localized online marketing. </span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;">The truth is, public relations or PR is an important aspect of running a business and one that entrepreneurs should regulary use &#8212; not only to avert branding and image disasters. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">It should be a regular part of building your brand, establishing your credibility, attracting prospects, and converting leads into buyers.</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">What Is PR?</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Public relations is the process of building awareness and credibility for your company, product or service among your target market.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">The process involves working with key influencers &#8211; traditionally journalists but now also including bloggers and other content producers. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Key influencers are those who regularly reach your target market, are trusted by them, and are known to provide accurate and reliable information. They are an objective third party, not paid by you.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Because this awareness comes from a trustworthy source, your credibility increases. Notice the effect of a product review published by a magazine because the reporter genuinely believed in the product.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Compare that to a paid advertisement for the same product. Which one will have more impact on a prospect? </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">The reporter&#8217;s review will have more weight, because readers know it&#8217;s her honest opinion, one that wasn&#8217;t influenced by the promise of monetary reward.</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">How Can PR Help Your Business?</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Aside from achieving credibility, you can reach potential partners, investors, and of course, customers, through PR.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Online publicity, for example, will enhance the search engine rankings of your site and bring more organic, targeted traffic.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">An increase in sales and profits is the ultimate benefit of effective PR.</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">So You Wanna Do Your Own PR?</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Big companies either have in-house PR staff or hire PR agencies or consultants to the tune of thousands of dollars every month. This is out of reach for the average small business entrepreneur.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">However, this doesn&#8217;t mean that effective PR should be out of your reach as well. As a matter of fact, most entrepreneurs can manage their own publicity needs &#8211; if they have the basic PR skills and mindset.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Short of browsing hundreds of websites about PR or enrolling in a PR course at the nearest university, you can learn the basics of PR at your own pace and in the comfort of your home.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">One course I recommend is <a href="http://www.marketerschoice.com/app/?Clk=3521018">&#8220;How to Do Your Own PR&#8221;</a> by Elena Verlee, a sought-after PR consultant, serial entrepreneur and certified business coach. It&#8217;s an audio course you can load into your mp3 player to listen to while you drive around.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Or, if you&#8217;d rather read, full transcripts are available as well.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Aside from knowing PR inside and out, Verlee is an excellent teacher who&#8217;s able to simplify PR concepts and explain them in layman&#8217;s terms. Just try and fail at this course.</span></p>

Are you choking off the flow of money to you? Are you so immersed in &#8220;where is the money&#8221; and the panic, insecurity and frustration that goes with it?

<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Are you choking off the flow of money to you? Are you so immersed in &#8220;where is the money&#8221; and the panic, insecurity and frustration that goes with it?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">This will shut down the cycle of flow into your business for certain. This negative swirl of energy will have you do one of two things:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>1. Reach out with a lot of desperate actions. </strong>These actions are destined to fail because they come with desperate energy and your potential clients can smell desperation a mile away. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>2. You shut down.</strong> You do nothing and sit in stuck-ness &#8211; feeling the frustration and doubt. This closes off your flow as sure as if you turned off a faucet of flowing water &#8211; and gave it an extra twist just to make sure it&#8217;s off!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">What do you do to open up your flow to money?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">It&#8217;s simpler (although not always easier) than you think.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Pause.</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Pause, reconnect and then take inspired action. </strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong><em>Take a breath and carve out some time to reconnect with yourself, with others and with spirit.</em></strong> To connect with yourself spend some reflection time on your business. This will be the most important and business-changing thing you do all day. You want to remind yourself of your bigger vision and why you are really in your business which is to help clients have a better life or business. You want to remind yourself of your special and unique gifts that no one else on this planet has exactly like you do. And to remember that there are people waiting for you to show up in their life &#8211; they are waiting on YOU to show up. Reconnect to your power center &#8211; that place that knows you are on the right path.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong><em>Second, open up the connection with others.</em></strong> If you are like me, when you get into this place of doubt you may shut down with others. Instead it&#8217;s the time to open up the connection with others. This may look like calling a business girlfriend (or guy friend) who believes in you and what you are up to. They will remind you of your brilliance in these moments. Don&#8217;t call someone who is going to doubt you and question your business even if they are a well meaning family member. They just aren&#8217;t practiced at the faith that you need.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">You want to reach out to someone who believes in you. I just had this type of call from one of my business girlfriends. She is hosting a very big telesummit and its a few days away from launch and she&#8217;s in panic mode. She was focusing on what isn&#8217;t happening &#8211; why isn&#8217;t the money coming? I asked her to create a JoyFlow List. This is a list of signs of joy flowing into your business. Just on the phone she was into two pages of amazing things happening but it just wasn&#8217;t taking on the form she expected. This is the letting go part. You don&#8217;t always know the form that your purpose (or your expression of your joy) will take. Let go and appreciate the joy that is flowing.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong><em>Third, is to reconnect to spirit.</em></strong> Spirit works through you and expresses itself in your business. It is one of the highest opportunities for the expression of your spirit. When you are choking on the lack of money, clients or opportunities, then it&#8217;s a sign that you aren&#8217;t letting the flow of spirit into your business. You might think that the thing to do is to &#8220;hunker down and do more&#8221; but what you really want to do is to &#8220;let go and let flow&#8221; through who you are &#8220;being&#8221; in your business. The &#8220;being&#8221; comes before the &#8220;doing.&#8221; Allow your greatest and brilliant self to show up and THEN take inspired action. This will open up the flow. This can happen through journaling, walking in nature, listening to a meditation CD or talking with a spiritually minded coach.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">From this place of pausing, letting go and reconnecting comes the inspired actions. You still may not be clear on all the &#8220;hows&#8221; of what to do but from this place of connection you will be guided to the next step. When you commit to the next step of inspired action then the next step will appear. It won&#8217;t appear and be clear to you from a place of worry and doubt &#8211; only from that feeling and state of connection.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">The action is an important part of the process. Your business won&#8217;t grow without it. It needs to start first with your connecting, grounding in your &#8220;being&#8221; a powerful, audaciously savvy CEO of your company and allowing spirit to move through you. From this place you take inspired actions of smart marketing and business growth actions.</span></p>
