Modern BusinesswomanSeriously, spend a few minutes on google and you will find hundreds (probably thousands!) of “online success blueprints”… from how to create a website, to publishing an ezine; to creating your opt-in freebie, using autoresponders, publishing info products, writing articles, hosting teleseminars, being a guest on radio shows, writing sales copy and more…

They come in all shapes and sizes too… ebooks, toolkits, software, audio products, membership programs, etc. I sell them myself and they’re great but, they’re not the only thing you need to be successful.

If blueprints were enough we’d all be making millions online.

A blueprint simply points you in one specific direction where personal coaching is like having your own personal tour guide to show you the way, highlighting important things along the way as they relate to YOU.

Think of it this way… A blueprint can teach you how to publish an online newsletter but it can’t tell you if you’ve actually created a good newsletter. It doesn’t know if you’ve put together a kick butt newsletter or the worst one ever and it can’t provide feedback on how to IMPROVE it.

Don’t get me wrong, a blueprint is a great starting place but, personal coaching provides specific and precise feedback that builds a bridge between where you are now and the goals you have for your business.

Women in Business Online: Protect Your Ideas and Content with Google Alerts

iStock_000004474914XSmallWould YOU know if a copycat was using the page content from your company website right now?

I have Google Alerts set up for all facets of my online business from my name and company name to relevant key words and phrases like “women in business online” as an example.

Today, my alert set for this specific phrase notified me that someone had copied an entire page script from my IAWBO website word for word, and was using it to describe a blog talk radio show interview.

So what should you do when/if this happens? Here’s what I did…

Step one: I took a screenshot of the page. To do this, press ctrl and the “print screen” key. On my keyboard the key is marked “prt sc” (your keyboard may be different). Then paste into paint or another graphics program and save. Think of this as your “evidence”.

Step two: A discovery like this is guaranteed to make you angry. I learned log ago that the best thing to do is step away from your computer to give myself a cooling off period.

Step three: Once some of the anger has dissipated it’s time to contact the offender to ask them to remove the stolen copy from their site immediate.

Tip: The reality is that it’s highly unlikely that the individual who “borrowed” your copy will admit to it so rather than send a hot-headed request I tend to give them a way to save face.

In my case today, the copy was found on a Blog Talk Radio Show site so it is possible that a guest provided the “stolen” copy to the show host. So, I added a phrase that read something like this “If this copy was provided to you from an outside source or show guest please let us know.”

I included a web link to the page where I discovered the stolen copy as well as a link to my site with the original copy.

So far (touch wood) this is the first major copycat violation I’ve experienced.

It really did tick me off but I’m happy to report that within 30 minutes of sending my email to the show host the “borrowed” copy was removed.

Without Google Alerts set to notify me of mention of my keywords and phrases I may never have discovered the copycat. Don’t wait another minute to protect your business and get your Google Alerts in place today.

How to achieve your goals… chunk it down

next stepsSometimes our biggest life goals seem so overwhelming. We rarely see them as a series of small, achievable tasks, but in reality, breaking down a large goal into smaller tasks – and accomplishing them one at a time – is exactly how any big goal gets achieved.

After you have decided what you really want, with specific deadlines, the next step is to determine all of the individual action steps you will need to take to accomplish your goal.

HOW TO CHUNK IT DOWN

There are several ways to figure out the action steps you will need to take to accomplish any goal. One is to consult with people who have already done what you want to do and ask what steps they took. From their experience, they can give you all of the necessary steps as well as advice on what pitfalls to avoid. Another way is to purchase a book or manual that outlines the process.

Yet another way is to start from the end and look backward. You simply close your eyes and imagine that it is now the future and you have already achieved your goal. Then just look back and see what you had to do to get to where you now are. What was the last thing you did? And then the thing before that, and then the thing before that, until you arrive at the first action you had to start with.

REMEMBER THAT IT IS OKAY NOT TO KNOW HOW TO DO SOMETHING.

It’s okay to ask for guidance and advice from those who do know. Sometimes you can get it free, and sometimes you have to pay for it.

Get used to asking, “Can you tell me how to go about…?” and “What would I have to do to…?” and “How did you…?”

Keep researching and asking until you can create a realistic action plan that will get you from where you are to where you want to go. What will you need to do? How much money will you need to save or raise? What new skills will you need to learn? What resources will you need to mobilize? Who will you need to enroll in your vision? Who will you need to ask for assistance? What new disciplines or habits will you need to build into your life?

Another valuable technique for creating an action plan for your goals is called mind mapping.

HOW TO USE MIND MAPPING

Mind mapping is a simple but powerful process for creating a detailed to-do list for achieving your goal. It lets you determine what information you’ll need to gather, who you’ll need to talk to, what small steps you’ll need to take, how much money you’ll need to earn or raise, which deadlines you’ll need to meet, and so on – for each and every goal.

When I began creating my first educational audio program – a breakthrough goal that led to extraordinary gains for me and my business – I used mind mapping to help me “chunk down” that very large goal into all the individual tasks I would need to complete to produce a finished product.

To mind-map your own goals, follow these steps as illustrated in the example:

1. Center circle: In the center circle, jot down the name of your stated goal- in this case, Create an Audio Educational Program.
2. Outside circles: Next, divide the goal into the major categories of tasks you’ll need to accomplish to achieve the greater goal – in this case, Title, Studio, Topics, Audience, and so on.
3. Spokes: Then, draw spokes radiating outward from each mini-circle and label each one (such as Write Copy, Color Picture for Back Cover, and Arrange Lunch.)

On a separate line connected to the mini-circle, write every single step you’ll need to take. Break down each one of the more detailed task spokes with action items to help you create your master to-do list.

NEXT, MAKE A DAILY TO-DO LIST

Once you’ve completed a mind map for your goal, convert all of the to-do items into daily action items by listing each one on your daily to-do lists and committing to a completion date for each one. Then schedule them in the appropriate order into your calendar and do whatever it takes to stay on schedule.

DO FIRST THINGS FIRST

The goal is to stay on schedule and complete the most important item first. In his excellent book, Eat That Frog! 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time, Brian Tracy reveals not just how to conquer procrastination but also how to prioritize and complete all of your action items.

In his unique system, Brian advises goal-setters to identify the one to five things you must accomplish on any given day, and then pick the one you absolutely must do first. This becomes your biggest and ugliest frog. He then suggests you accomplish that task first – in essence, eat that frog first – and, by so doing; make the rest of your day much, much easier. It’s a great strategy. But unfortunately, most of us leave the biggest and ugliest frog for last, hoping it will go away or somehow become easier. It never does.

However, when you accomplish your toughest task early in the day, it sets the tone for the rest of your day.

By chunking down your goals, and then taking daily action on them, you create momentum and build your confidence, both of which move you farther and faster toward the achievement of your goals.

Now go take some action!

Mistake 1 – Begin with marketing - This applies to those who are just starting out on Twitter as well as how to start every day on Twitter. When you are just starting out, focus on relationships and building connections, as well as being visible. Think of it this way: you have to earn the right to market. You earn the right to market by being sociable. After you have spent time building relationships, then you can market, drive traffic, build your list and even make sales from Twitter. Always think relationship first.

Start out each day on Twitter by being sociable. How would you like it if your spouse started to market you first thing in the morning before ever saying good morning? Exactly.

Mistake 2 – Being serious all the time - I see so many people tweet like they are presenting a paper at an international conference. While you do want to be serious about what you do, you also want to add a little fun as well. Let your personality show. This goes a long way it helping people to know, like and trust you. Who do you like to be friends with? Those who are serious all the time or those that have an engaging personality and are not afraid to show it in any situation?

Mistake 3 – Don’t get involved in conversations/community - I call this being a “hit & run” tweeter. These folks come in, dump their message, (usually a marketing message) and then they are gone. Big mistake. Become involved in discussions, answer questions, become a recognized part of the community.

You can talk about anything. Recently I used a quote from M*A*S*H and got into a conversation with someone about the characters from the show. Simple relationship building.

And you don’t have to get on a plane or drive across town to do it.

10 Ways to Use Google Alerts For Business and Social Media (Plus Tips to Improve Search Results)

googleOne of the most useful services released by Google in recent years is its powerful Google Alerts. This free tool allows you to receive e-mail notifications when keywords and phrases that you specify appear on websites, blogs, online news channels and more.

Here are 10 ways to leverage Google Alerts for your business:

1. Business Name - Keep track of websites that mention your company. This is an opportunity to send a note of thanks or address an issue if something derogatory is posted like a complaint about customer service. Big companies track mentions of their businesses online and you should too.

2. Personal Name - Find out where you’re mentioned online. This is especially important for prominent figures such as authors, speakers, celebrities, and individual service providers.

3. Website – Track where your website is mentioned by creating an alert for your domain. Leave off the leading “www” and instead just specify your domain and extension such as “YourCompanyName dot com.”

4. Blog - If you host a blog, follow the website guidelines above to create an alert for your blog domain. This should also produce results if your blog link is posted somewhere with a specific pointer to one of your pages.

5. Titles - If you distribute articles for online marketing purposes, create an alert for each article title so that you can track where your articles are appearing. Authors can use this same strategy for tracking book titles.

6. Industry Research - To stay on top of industry news, create alerts for keywords and key phrases for your industry. For example, I have alerts for “publishing industry” and “business book.” This makes it easy to stay on top of news, competition and much more. If you are using social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter, this can help you locate useful content for micro-blogging or to give you topic ideas to cover in your blog.

7. Competitive Research - If you want to find out who is talking about your competition or where they are being mentioned, create alerts for each competitor’s business name and/or website URL.

8. Lead Generation - If breaking news can produce leads for your company, use Google Alerts for related phrases. For example, if you own a human resources firm and want to find out what companies are hiring in Sacramento, you could create several alerts: “now hiring Sacramento,” “job posting Sacramento,” and “job listing Sacramento.”

9. Lead Research - If there is a company or client that you want to land, create alerts to stay on top of their most recent online activity. This can provide valuable insight into what they company is up to and who is talking about them.

10. Top Client Research - Track activity for your top ten or twenty existing clients. This can give you valuable insight into what they’re up to, and also provide you with reasons to contact them. For example, if one of your clients receives major media coverage, you will learn about it right away and can send them a note of congratulations.

Useful Google Search Tricks

Exact Keyword Search: You can specify exact keywords by putting a plus sign (+) in front of the word. For example, if you search for the word “publish,” Google search results would include “publishing” and “publisher.” Adding a plus sign to the beginning of the word (+publish) will ensure that you only receive exact matches.

Exact Key Phrase Search: When you search for a phrase, Google results will returns anything that includes all of the words in the phrase, not that exact phrase. But if you enclose your search in quotes (“how to publish a book”), the results will only include that exact phrase.

Alternate Keyword: To return a search with alternate results, use “OR” between the words (the letters OR must be capitalized). For example, “author OR writer” will return results with either keyword. For a more complex search, you can put part of the phrase in parenthesis: (author OR writer) “business books”.
